Wanda Luthman’s Children’s Books

Arctic Tern in flight | Dreams of Zugunruhe

Read the feature on ‘Dreams of Zugunruhe’ at Wanda Luthman’s Children’s Books.

Author Michael Kinsey, Ph.D. describes the inspiration behind the award winning children’s picture book.

Here are some highlights:

“Terns brave sea, land, and air throughout the  course of their lives – in some of the harshest conditions to boot. They are equipped with little more than their slight, angular stature and their instincts. Migration takes them to distant locations that serve their needs for food and ideal breeding conditions. They sign no social contract; they simply respond to an overwhelming instinctual restlessness called Zugunruhe.”

Interview with Illustrator Ros Webb

Dreams of Zugunruhe illustrated children's book

In the picture book, Dreams of Zugunruhe, illustrator Ros Webb brings the captivating world of Arctics Terns to life in a charming series of whimsical watercolor paintings.

Based in Ireland, Webb began her career as a fashion designer. Today, she creates fashion- and children’s book images. Her work has appeared in VogueMarie Claire, and Elle.

What is your approach to illustrating children’s stories and how would you describe your artistic style?

My overall approach is to get a feel for the story and what the author is trying to convey in the writing. My artistic style is free and I try to get ideas down quickly, so as not to lose the feeling of movement and life within a story.

What made you interested in illustrating children’s books?

I have always loved children’s picture books and used to buy them for myself when I had no children, just to enjoy the illustrations and the stories. I enjoy writers and illustrators such as Judith Kerr, Quentin Blake, and Lauren Child.

Mother Tern Little Tern Dreams of Zugunruhe

What makes a great children’s book?

I think a good story with a positive and loving message – without being too preachy! Also, great illustrations that children love and characters (such as animals) that bring the story to life. I always enjoy animals as main characters and love to follow their adventures.

What was the biggest challenge in creating visuals that would bring the story to life?

To create variety in the images, getting different angles and perspectives while keeping it interesting for the reader. It helps to think of each page as a new scene in a movie, with the camera cutting into view from different angles and viewing points.

What did you enjoy most about illustrating Dreams of Zugunruhe?

This was one of my favorite books to illustrate. I got to paint amazing landscapes and birds, which I love. I could put lots of different finishes, reflecting different times of the day and seasons.

You’ve illustrated a lot of picture books. What is something about Dreams of Zugunruhe that sets it apart from other books you’ve illustrated?

Most of the books I illustrate have a combination of both human and animal characters. Dreams of Zugunruhe is all animals – which was great for me.

Which image was your favorite out of the ones you created for Dreams of Zugunruhe? What do you like about how it turned out?

I love the final page with the little tern and his mother. I love the way the sun is setting behind them both. I did enjoy creating all of the illustrations, though, and it’s hard to pick a favorite from so many that I think have turned out so well.

What is your all-time favorite picture book and what did you love about it?

The Big Sleepy Bear and Pink Flamingos. This book was written by my husband and illustrated by me. When our children were little, this was one of their favorite stories for bedtime. It was a labor of love (as all books are), and it kick-started my career as a children’s book illustrator.
